Making an Impact Annual Highlights
SUPPORTING COMMUNITY PARTNERS TO IMPROVE HEALTH
Working with a network of nonprofit organizations with deep roots in our communities is one of the most important ways Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oklahoma (BCBSOK) can help members achieve their best health. In 2019, we contributed $980,000 to 23 community partners. This includes our Healthy Kids, Healthy Families® grants for efforts advancing nutrition and physical activity, supporting safe environments and preventing and managing disease. Through our collaboration with Feeding America, two Oklahoma food banks reported more than 130,000 meals distributed across the state.Learn more about organizations we supported in 2019
Bridging Gaps in Preventive Care
In Oklahoma, a third of the population lives in a rural community. Working with community partners, the Caring Van® mobile health program brings preventive care directly to people who need it. In 2019, the program’s nine vans helped deliver vaccinations and other preventive health services to nearly 26,000 Oklahomans. The vans are a program of the Oklahoma Caring Foundation, a 501(c)3 organization sponsored by BCBSOK. And our Mobile Assistance Center (MAC) team travels throughout the state, including to tribal and rural areas, to provide help people enroll in coverage and use their benefits.Learn more about the Oklahoma Caring Van program
MAKING CONNECTIONS IN OUR COMMUNITIES
Every year, thousands of BCBSOK employees dedicate time and energy to make a difference in our communities. In 2019, nearly 560 employees volunteered more than 13,900 hours of their time. Thanks to them, many nonprofit organizations earned matching donations from employees logging their time in our Blue CorpsSM program. BCBSOK employees also contributed more than $150,000 to the Oklahoma Caring Foundation, United Way and other charitable organizations.

Caring for Our Environment
As a health insurer, we know the environment plays a part in the health and well-being of our members and communities. We’re committed to sustainable practices like recycling, waste reduction, renewable energy use, and responsible food sourcing. In 2019, we recycled more than 120,000 pounds of paper, saving more than 1,000 trees, 180 cubic yards of landfill space, 425,000 gallons of water and 23,000 gallons of oil. BCBSOK also participates in the CDP — which helps companies, cities, states and regions manage their environmental impact.
